The Anderson Open Call
The Anderson is issuing an open call to all VCUarts students and faculty for exhibition and event proposals to take place at the Anderson during the Fall 2021–Spring 2022 academic year. Proposals may include solo or group exhibitions, installations, performances, events, or other experimental projects and formats lasting up to three weeks. The call is open to all VCUarts Departments at the graduate and undergraduate level in all mediums and disciplines including dance, music, theater, new media, film, craft, fine arts, etc. Applicants are challenged to critically engage with contemporary exhibition practices and strategies in order to cultivate unique experiences for a diverse and sophisticated VCU audience. Submissions will be reviewed by the Anderson’s curatorial staff and projects will be selected based on strength of proposal. Applicants are encouraged to consider the expansive potential of the galleries that extends beyond using them simply as a critique space.
Additionally, given the challenges posed by COVID-19, applicants are strongly encouraged to consider adaptive and alternative strategies to traditional exhibition. Projects that provide multiple access points, that make use of outdoor space, asynchronous or atypical approaches are encouraged. While the Anderson is currently open to the public, digital and virtual engagements have become more important than ever to allow for greater accessibility to the space. Although such engagement is not required for your proposed project, the Anderson welcomes web-based proposals or web-based elements that might complement your project.
Unless the proposal specifies a shorter timespan, accepted proposals will run three weeks, starting and ending on a Wednesday. Accepted proposals will be distributed throughout the Anderson’s flexible-use galleries and spaces, as well as non-traditional areas created by the building’s unique architecture and history of use. Your proposal should be submitted well in advance of the exhibition or event dates that you are requesting.
There is no deadline for submissions; the call is ongoing. Please note that all visitors to The Anderson must wear face masks and follow physical distancing protocols. ***Please note that The Anderson building does not have an elevator, so please take this into account regarding accessibility and transport of artworks. The upper floors are inaccessible to wheelchairs and visitors with limited mobility. A ramp is available at the front entrance of The Anderson for wheelchair access to first floor galleries.
