Collaborative Project Featuring Work by KI Professor Wins First Place in VCU’s Next Big Idea Challenge

Categories

Congratulations to Coding Beats, a collaborative project among faculty, including KI professor Kate Sicchio, on winning first place and people’s choice in VCU’s Next Big Idea Challenge! Coding Beats, a program designed to promote diversity within the computer science industry, teaches middle school students computer science fundamentals as their code generates hip-hop beats. Functioning as a summer camp program, students will spend four days learning to code beats, followed by a fifth day where they will compose their own beats and be paired with a local rapper for a live coding performance. The combined funding granted by both awards will go towards computers, headphones, meals for campers, and a venue for the final performance.
