Community News from Painting + Printmaking: September 2021

MFA students hosted their annual Pecha Kucha on Sept. 1st to introduce their work and discuss their interests and practice.

Veronika Pausova (MFA, ’13) announced the opening of a solo show at the Esker Foundation in January 2022.

Joan Gaustad‘s (BFA, ’75) new memoir, ‘Someone’s Missing—and I Think It’s Me’ launched September 8th, at an event hosted by VCU Libraries. The book is about Gaustad’s husband and PAPR professor emeritus, Jerry Donato, and offers advice for those dealing with brain illness in loved ones. In conjunction with the memoir’s release, an exhibition of Gaustad’s work went on view at The Anderson on campus.

Devin Harclerode (MFA, ’16) had a solo exhibition, Soft Body, No Limbs, at Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Greenville, South Carolina

Current MFA student Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo had work in an exhibition at Phebe Conley Gallery in Fresno, CA in collaboration with the Brooklyn Museum. The show, Nobody Promised You Tomorrow: Art 50 Years After Stonewall, presents a constellation of twenty-eight LGBTQ+ artists born after the 1969 Stonewall Uprising and working, five decades later, in New York, the hometown of the revolt.

Born In Flames: Feminist Futures, a group show at the Bronx Museum featuring work of professor Caitlin Cherry was reviewed in the New York Times

James Cohan Gallery presented the work Grace Weaver (MFA, ’15) at the 2021 Armory Show in New York

Le Revenant, a solo exhibition by professor Monsieur Zohore, opened at De Boer Gallery in Los Angeles

Convergent Evolutions, a group show at Pace Gallery NY featuring work by professor Caitlin Cherry went on view September 10th and is open through October 23rd. The show was additionally reviewed on Artnet

Professor Monsieur Zohore was the recipient of the 2021 Trawick Prize Young Artist Award

Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA hosted a virtual artist panel discussion with Jackie Amézquita, John Hee Taek Chae (MFA, ’20), LaRissa Rogers (BFA ’19), and Luis Vasquez La Roche (MFA, ’20), on LaRissa Rogers’ recent solo exhibition in the Dové Gallery, On Belonging: The Space In Between

Professor Cara Benedetto exhibited in a group show, 3.0, at ChapterNY’s new Tribeca gallery location

Chino Amobi (BFA, ’09) exhibited a solo booth with Fitzpatrick Gallery at Liste Art Fair Basel
