Community News from Craft/Material Studies: October 2022

Jerry “Jay” Sharpe (BFA ’90) was honored at a VCU Alumni event for his remarkable professional achievements.

Travis Townsend (MFA ’00) was interviewed by Anne Bujold (MFA ’18) for the latest issue of Drain, which was co-edited by MFA alum Karl Burkheimer.

Frankie Toan‘s (BFA ’12) exhibition Strange Familiars was on view at Craft Alliance.

Alum Summer Balcom (BFA ’18) was featured in a segment on NBC12 about her work and Craft + Design 2022.

Craft/Material Studies alumni Sarah Parker, Summer Balcom, and Rachel Rader had work featured at the VCUarts Craft/Material Studies Sponsored booth at Craft + Design in Richmond.

Tender Presence, a traveling exhibition curated by Spectral Matter, features work created and curated by many Craft/Material Studies alumni and faculty: Taylor Zarkades King, Vivian Chiu, Corey Pemberton, Adam Atkinson, Everett Hoffman, Andy Lowrie, and Mattie Hinkley. Over the summer, the exhibition was on view at Alma’s, a space run by MFA alum Sarah Mizer. The show is now on view at Penland through Nov 26.

Craft/Material Studies Prof. Bohyun Yoon, in collaboration with VCU Music Prof. Ross Walter, presented a performance at the Singleton Center for Performing Arts. Yoon and Walter are the recipients of a VCUarts Dean’s Faculty Summer Research Grant and presented the inaugural performance at Delaware Contemporary.

BFA major Brianna Cappelli was awarded best in student lighting at this year’s Innovation + Design competition, held by the International Society of Furniture Designers.

A-B Projects presented a State of Ceramics conversation with Magdolene Dykstra (MFA ’18) in conjunction with her solo exhibition.

A spotlight exhibition featuring the work of Prof. Rice Evans (MFA ’21) was displayed at Alma’s.

MFA student Abi Ogle‘s exhibition Barren Landscape was shown at Covenant College.

Andy Lowrie‘s (MFA ’20) work was featured in the two-person exhibition A Long Time at Iridian Gallery.

William Lenard‘s (MFA ’18) work was featured in the exhibition A Wolf In Sheep’s Skin at Iridian Gallery.

BFA major Justin R. Cockrell was selected as a featured artist for the 2022 Made In VA exhibition at Virginia MOCA. 

Prof. Emerita Susan Iverson‘s exhibition Observation – Light was on view at artspace Richmond.

Prof. Vivian Chiu and Emily McBride (MFA ’16) were both selected for the American Craft Council’s 2022 Emerging Artists Cohort.

Grace Whiteside (BFA ’17) appeared in Season 3 of Blown Away on Netflix.
