Black Movement Project: Discussion With LaJuné McMillan

VCUarts Dance + Choreography is pleased to present New Media Artist LaJuné McMillan discussing their work, the Black Movement Project, on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at 7:00 pm EST via Zoom. The Black Movement Project is an online database of motion capture data from Black performers and Black character base models, currently underrepresented in available online databases. This library will be used for various extended(virtual, augmented, mixed) reality projects, performances, games, and research purposes. BMP is a tool for activists, performers & artists to create diverse XR projects, a space to research how and why we move, and an archive of Black existence. This event is FREEE. LaJuné McMillan is a New Media Artist, and Creative Technologist creating art that integrates Performance, Virtual Reality, and Physical Computing to question our current forms of communication. LaJuné has had the opportunity to show and speak about their work at Pioneer Works, National Sawdust, Leaders in Software and Art, Creative Tech Week, and Art && Code’s Weird Reality. LaJuné was previously the Director of Skating at Figure Skating in Harlem, where they integrated STEAM and Figure Skating to teach girls of color about movement and technology. They have continued their research on Blackness, Movement, and Technology during residencies at Eyebeam, Barbarian Group, and Barnard College.

The Black Movement Project: Discussion with LaJuné McMillan is the third event in the 2020-2021 VCUarts Dance + Choreography season. The Dance season for 2020-2021 is supported in large part by a generous grant from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation. Season events include virtual screenings and discussions, and the potential for site-based performances.
