In the Red and Brown Water
VCUarts Theatre will be performing the award-winning, Tarell Alvin McCraney’s play, In the Red and Brown Water. A story of relationships, potential, and sacrifice that resonates across generations. In The Red and Brown Water features Oya, a young woman, a talented track runner, who decides to sacrifice her full ride to State University to remain behind with her mother who is slowly passing away. Oya’s life quickly becomes about relationships as she traverses the difficult societal expectations that govern her life.
McCraney is a celebrated playwright and actor most known for his feature film Moonlight, which took home an Academy Award in 2017. His work on In the Red and Brown Water, and by extension the whole of the Brother/Sister trilogy, is a poignant look at the struggle of living in the Louisiana projects. McCraney has been labeled as one of the definitive voices for the African American theatre community and should not be missed.
