“Beautiful Words are Subversive” Exhibition at VCUarts Arts Research Institute
Event Navigation

Beautiful Words are Subversive, is an exhibition curated by Nontsikelelo Mutiti, Assistant Professor in Graphic Design, and Tinashe Mushakavanhu, PhD.
This exhibition by Black Chalk & Co. (co-founders Mutiti and Mushakavanhu) combines print, text, audio-visual and objects to demonstrate the necessity of literature and the malevolence of authoritarian restrictions in Zimbabwe on artistic freedom. The works presented are informed by a preoccupation with archives, map making and graphic design. Through spacializing printed works by Zimbabwean writers, the exhibition raises fundamental questions regarding the connection between materiality and literary consciousness.
This exhibition will be on view at ARI through July 26th, 2019.
