VCUarts 2018 – 19 Faculty Research and Exploratory Grant Recipients

Each year, the VCUarts Dean’s Office provides research grant opportunities to support high quality faculty research and exploratory work.  Grants provide funding to support all stages of research, from initial exploration to the creation and presentation of new work.

Congratulations to the following faculty who have been awarded exploratory and research grants for the 2018-19 academic year.

 

Exploratory Grant Awardees

Josh Rodenberg, Instructor, Kinetic Imaging

To create a prototype application of an augmented reality instrument/experience for mobile platforms.

Justin Alexander, Assistant Professor, Music

To explore with Music Department Associate Professor, Dr. Tabatha Easley, how immersion in non-Western musical traditions will inform both their performance practice as The AarK Duo, and the pedagogical approach within their teaching practices.

Emily Smith, Assistant Professor, Interior Design

For a research project with Interior Design Adjunct Professor, Sara Reed, that will explore patterns found in the built environment, specifically in Virginia and the surrounding region.

 

Research Grant Awardees

Orla Mc Hardy, Assistant Professor, Kinetic Imaging

For the development of 3D digital animation skills necessary for Mc Hardy’s project “Nitefeedz.”

John Freyer, Associate Professor, Photography and Film

For the recording of an original composition, “One Foot in Front of the Other,” first performed at the Tate Modern in 2018 with UK Recovery Choirs Unite.

Michael Jones McKean, Assistant Professor, Sculpture and Extended Media

To support the research and fabrication of a large-scale sculptural installation to be presented at the El Paso Art Museum in El Paso, Texas and The Arizona State Art Museum in Tempe.

Corin Hewitt, Associate Professor, Sculpture and Extended Media

For the creation of a two-channel film shot in parallel trenches in Hewitt’s home/studio in the Fan district that connects his family’s current dwelling to the history and politics of property ownership in Richmond.

Aaron McIntosh, Assistant Professor, Craft and Material Studies

For the construction of a large-scale statue and sculptural canopy, production of vinyl wall images, framing of large-scale drawings, and to support community organizers to lead on-site workshops, as part of McIntosh’s Invasive Queer Kudzu project (pictured).

Karen Kopryanski, Assistant Professor, Theatre

For attendance at the conference, Global Theatre Experience, (Austria), where performers and theater educators from around the world will demonstrate methodologies for revealing truthful expression of difficult emotions onstage.

Nicole Killian, Assistant Professor, Graphic Design

For the creation of Hot Topixxx, an experimental platform of the book as space, as part of Killian’s publishing initiative, Nico Fontana.

Eric Rivera, Assistant Professor, Dance and Choreography

For the creation of a new work for Ballet Nacional de Santo Domingo, which will premiere at the Festival Endanco Internacional de Danza Contemporanea in September, 2019.
