Kikau Alvaro

Kikau Alvaro hails from the San Jose, CA and comes to VCU directly from San Diego, where he received his MFA in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University (SDSU), which is one of only two programs of its kind.  He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society.

He is a proud member of Actor’s Equity.  This past summer, he originated the role of Captain of the Guard in Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez’s (Frozen) latest musicalUp Here at La Jolla Playhouse, directed by Alex Timbers (Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson)and choreographed by Josh Bergasse (On The Town, Gigi).  Recent performance credits include Bernardo in West Side Story with San Diego Musical Theatre and Cinderella’s Prince in Into the Woods and Robert Martin in The Drowsy Chaperone at SDSU.  In 2016, he performed Lerner and Loewe classics during Modernism Week as part of a celebration of Frederick Loewe at his estate in Palm Springs.  He has also performed at the Old Globe Theatre in Pushing the Envelope, which was a concert series that made connections between Michael John LaChiusa and other visionary composers like Maury Yeston, Jeanine Tesori, and Adam Guettel.  In addition to this, he has been a part of a New Works collaboration between SDSU and La Jolla Playhouse, portraying the roles of Albert in Tony Award winner BD Wong’s new musical, Mister Doctor, and Chase Spacegrove in indie band Home By Hovercraft’s new musical On the Eve. 

As a director/choreographer, he has worked on both classics and new works.  He has provided TrailerPark-5 2direction or choreography for Big River (starring Tony Winner James Monroe Iglehart), The Trouble With Doug (New Works Festival), Fly By Night (World Premiere), and[title of show] (West Coast Premiere) for Theatreworks in Palo Alto.  Some of his other favorites include Shrek and Guys and Dolls (Diablo Theatre Center in Walnut Creek, CA—Shellie Award Nominations for Direction and Choreography), Lysistrata Jones (Pace University), Chicago (Marquee Productions), and Urinetown (San Jose State University).  At SDSU, he was on the artistic teams for The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Into the Woods, and The Drowsy Chaperone.

In the summer of 2016, he directed and choreographed a production of Fiddler on the Roof at Cabrillo Stage in Aptos, CA, where he has helmed celebrated productions of Anything Goes and Oklahoma! In addition to all of this, he is the co-host of a weekly Disney-themed podcast with his long-time collaborator Jacob Brent called Main Street and Beyond.  Follow his journey on Instagram @kikautown.
