Announcing 2015-16 Faculty Research and Exploratory Grants

The VCUarts Dean’s Faculty Research Grants Programs allow faculty to create and present new work and explore today’s pressing research questions within the fields of arts and design.These opportunities provide funding to support all stages of research from initial exploration to creation and presentation, performance and exhibition. Congratulations to our three Exploratory Research Grant recipients for the 2015-16 academic year, and the four faculty members who were awarded Faculty Research Grants in the first cycle.

2015-16 Exploratory Research Grants

Courtney Harris, Assistant Professor, Dance and Choreography
Support for an immersive performance and art installation inspired by the life and work of early twentieth-century painter Romaine Brooks.

Susie Ganch, Associate Professor, Craft and Material Studies
Studio support for a residency at the Kohler Arts/Industry, an internationally recognized program that provides participants with the opportunity to discover new ways of working through the exploration of techniques and concepts that are not possible in their own studios.

David Toney, Assistant Professor, Theatre
Development assistance for a film and play that will bring awareness to suicide rates amongst Afghanistan and Iraq veterans in the United States through the sharing of personal stories recorded at military bases and hospitals.

Catherine Roach, Assistant Professor, Art History
Production assistance for the book Pictures-within-Pictures in Nineteenth Century Britain.

Eric Rivera, Assistant Professor, Dance and Choreography
Support for a collaboration with Mexican dance company Ciudad Interior on a restaging of Rivera’s duet Contratiempo.

Kirk Kjeldsen, Assistant Professor, Cinema
Support for researching, preparation, submission & promotion for the feature-length, 35mm film short Gavagai.

Susanna Klein, Assistant Professor, Music
Support for the recording and public release of This and That, a CD compilation of 10 short, stand-alone pieces for string trio to be released on the Blue Griffin Label.
