Through its admission process Skowhegan seeks to bring together a gifted and diverse group of individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to art-making and inquiry. Sixty-five Participants are accepted annually. An academic background in art is not required. The admissions panels consider both those who are enrolled in academic programs and artists who have been working independently. Financial status is not a consideration in the admissions process, and financial need should not deter artists from applying for admission. Applicants' work is reviewed by panels of distinguished artists comprised of Skowhegan's Board of Governors and the upcoming summer's faculty. Admission is based primarily on work samples (10 images or a 5-minute video sample). Skowhegan alumni may not reapply. Applicants must be at least 21 years old before the session begins.

The commitment of time required
In accepting admission to Skowhegan artists agree to stay the full nine-week term of the session. Exceptions are made in cases of emergency only. Absences from the program to fulfill other professional commitments will not be authorized. They disrupt the community, the development of work and participation in critiques, lectures and studio visits. For this reason, artists who leave for such purposes will forfeit their admission to and participation in the program.

That Participants are encouraged to come prepared to work without a preconceived agenda or schedule
In fact, many artists who come to Skowhegan having to complete a specific body of work for a scheduled exhibition find that the focus and resolve this requires is often at odds with some of the most important benefits of the Skowhegan program: a high level of interaction and critical input with peers and an atmosphere of openness, spontaneity and support for risk-taking.

eligibility: Three major Fellowships will be awarded, one up to $20,000 in any field of music; one up to $20,000 in architectural design and history, art and design, theatre, dance, or instrumental or vocal music; and one up to $9,000 in art, architecture, dance, landscape architecture, theatre, or urban and regional planning. Up to three additional Fellowships of lesser amounts may also be granted upon Committee recommendations.

The Fellowships are to be used by the recipients toward defraying the expenses of advanced study in America or abroad. The Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship competition is open to graduates of the College of Fine and Applied Arts of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and to graduates of similar institutions of equal educational standing whose principal or major studies have been in one of the following fields: Architecture—Design or History; Art— all branches; Dance— Choreography, Performance, Performance/Choreography; Landscape Architecture— History, Culture and Heritage, Sustainable Design, or Design Theory and Practice; Music—all branches; Theatre—Acting, Design, Playwriting, or Theatre Research/History; Urban and Regional Planning—all branches. A Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Art, Dance, Landscape Architecture, Music, Theatre, or Urban and Regional Planning is required.

Although there is no age limitation for applicants, with other factors being equal, preference will be given to applicants who are under twenty-five years of age.

Regulations Governing the Award
Each Fellowship is for one academic year of study in a program approved by the Committee. The place of study may be in America or abroad, in an approved educational institution, with an approved private teacher, or in independent study. Fellowship recipients must meet all entrance requirements of the proposed educational institution. Other grants, fellowships and part-time graduate assistantships may be held simultaneously with the Fellowship.

Selection is based upon the applicant’s high achievement in his/her major field of study or related cultural fields, as well as the character, merit and suitability of the program proposed by the applicant. Seriousness of purpose and good moral character will be considered as part of each application and will be included in the judgment of the Committee.

The candidates who, in the opinion of the Committee, appear to possess the greatest promise and the greatest likelihood to benefit from the Fellowship will be recommended to the Chancellor and Provost at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as recipients. Group work is not eligible for submission.

eligibility: The Lauren A. Woods Graduate Fellowship winner is automatically the VCU Phi Kappa Phi Chapter nominee for the National Fellowship Award, which is a national award of $5,000 given by the Phi Kappa Phi national office to 80 graduating seniors from universities across the country.

The applicant has excellent scholastic achievement, excellent standardized test scores, when applicable (e.g., GRE, LSAT, MCAT), participates in honors and community activities, provides a clear and complete expression of study plans and career goals, and submits excellent letters of reference.

how to apply: One of the largest and most competitive scholarship programs in the nation, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship provides awards of up to $50,000 per year for up to six years of study to deserving low-income college seniors and recent college graduates (who graduated within the past five years).

The amount and duration of the Foundation’s awards vary, based on factors that include cost of graduate education and other scholarships received. Approximately 1,000 students are nominated for the program each year, with approximately 35 receiving the Foundation’s financial assistance to attend the nation’s top graduate and professional schools.

A review panel of distinguished faculty and admissions professionals judge the nominees using criteria including academic achievement and critical thinking ability, financial need, will to succeed, and a breadth of interest and activities.

Students interested in the program must be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Faculty Representative at their school, and may not apply directly to the Foundation. eligibility: In honor of Naomi Winston, an annual scholarship has been established and made available, through the National Society of Arts and Letters, to young visual artists between the ages of 16 and 22.
Applicants must demonstrate exceptional talent and promise of future success.
Additionally, the applicant:
a) must be a citizen of the United States.
b) must be between 16 and 22 years of age by February 1, 2012. Proof of age must be submitted (a copy of current driver’s license, birth certificate or passport) with the application.
c) must submit a CD and printout of their works to a chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL). See brochure at the external web link for addresses.
d) must demonstrate a serious commitment to their art by stating in writing their career plans for the future.
e) must specify the mode of further study: private study, special training, or for personal advancement in their art.
The scholarship funds are only for private study, for special training or for personal advancement in the applicant’s art medium. They can be used for workshops, museum programs, summer programs, etc. The funds are not for college tuition, housing or travel.
The maximum amount awarded to an applicant is $5000.

eligibility: The PACME awards honor individuals who have made significant contributions toward enhancing VCU's commitment to diversity. Four separate awards recognize students, faculty, classified and hourly staff and administrators. In addition to the award, each recipient will receive $500.

The Riese-Melton Award, which is given for contributions to cross-cultural relations, is the capstone award. The recipient of this award will be chosen from the four PACME winners and will receive an additional $250.

Individual students and student organizations are eligible to receive the PACME Student Award which recognizes contributions and leadership in the criteria outlined above, especially in the areas of promoting civility, building community and promoting effective cross-cultural communication

Purpose
The university promotes an environment of excellence, access and diversity. To maintain such an environment, every person and organizational unit should recognize and accept responsibility to contribute to this integral part of VCU's mission.

These awards are bestowed by the President of VCU to members of the university community in recognition of a significant contribution toward the principles, goals and ideals of affirmative action or toward enhancing the institution's commitment to diversity.

They were created to recognize and encourage such contributions that may include (but are not limited to) promoting civility, building community, establishing effective cross-cultural initiatives, advocating equity, and nurturing openness and inclusion within the university community.

eligibility: The competition is open to college students in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia who are at least 18 years of age, but will NOT have reached their 27th birthday by January 1, 2012.

THE COMPETITION
Digital design integrates and expands fine arts, photography, graphic communications, and digital media, offering artists and designers a wide new means of expression.
The scholarship competition invites students to submit two-dimensional works such as photographs or illustrations that have been generated or modified in a design or photographic software program.
The competition asks entrants to submit works in which the digital medium or program is used with specific creative goals in mind and reflects both a technical and an artistic understanding of new media.
Entries should reflect a creative use of media that adds an additional dimension or element to the work and is integral to the piece. For example, because a photograph has been taken with a digital camera does not automatically qualify it for consideration.

The Arts Club of Washington was founded in 1916 and is headquartered in the James Monroe House, 2017 I Street, NW, a National Historic Landmark. The Arts Club sponsors an ongoing variety of programs focusing on the visual, literary, and performing arts and on historic preservation.

eligibility: Each spring, the VCU Staff Senate sponsors an annual walk-a-thon to raise funds for the Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship, an undergraduate award for juniors and seniors in financial need with a grade point average of 2.7 or better who can demonstrate past or current community service. Since beginning the program in 2005, the scholarship has helped 44 undergraduate students continue their education and graduate from VCU. To be eligibible to apply you must:
• Be classified as a full-time undergraduate junior or senior at VCU by fall 2012
• Document a GPA of 2.7 or above
• Possess a need for financial assistance
• Be employed a minimum of 15 hrs per week (proof of employment requested on company letterhead)
• Provide one letter of recommendation
• Not have been a previous Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship award recipient

eligibility: The State Fair of Virginia Scholarship will be awarded to a VCUarts student displaying creative or academic excellence in his or her chosen field of study. Scholarship recipients will reflect, through their work and scholarship, the core values of the SFVA: excellence, integrity, diversity, flexibility, stewardship and creativity. VCUarts awardees will, in addition, seek to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Commonwealth of Virginia through individual artistic endeavors as well as involvement with State Fair of Virginia events. The scholarship recipient will be a current student in the School of the Arts in the year that money is awarded.
The State Fair of Virginia Scholarship award will rotate on a repeating yearly basis between the departments of Art Education, Theatre, Photography and Film, Art Foundation, Dance and Choreography, Music, Painting and Printmaking, Sculpture, and Craft/Material Studies. In addition, awardees will be encouraged by their department and the School of the Arts to volunteer their time and talents to the SFVA organization in order to greater serve the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Pertinent information about the recipients, including full name and home addresses, will be supplied to the donor each year prior to September 1 for publicity purposes and award recognition.
