Request for Proposals
Description: Funding of $30,000 for Undergraduate Student Research Grants began five years ago with the purpose of encouraging curiosity, creativity, risk-taking and scholarly investigation into a project or subject of interest relevant to the student’s major. To date 50 big ideas have been funded at an average of $2,500 per proposal. Research and creative work that is: 1) interdisciplinary 2) involves student collaboration and 3) draws on the expertise of a faculty mentor is preferred.
Eligibility: VCUarts full-time undergraduate students graduating after December 2011. VCUarts students may submit a proposal to collaborate on a project with a student from any major attending VCU full-time as long as there is a clear connection between the project and the students’ curricular interest.

Award Amounts: Ranging from $500 to $5,000
Number of Awards: Approximately 15. A summary of selected proposals from last year can be viewed at this website
Notification: by Friday, December 2, 2011. Award funds will be deposited into the department operating account of the primary student in January 2012.
Requirements: The proposal must include:
- the connection between the project and the curriculum
- anticipated outcome of project
- the value of the research/creative activity in the discipline
- timeline (demonstrate completion date by December 2012)
- budget request, for ex. materials, books, travel (note: wages cannot be funded; equipment funded by the proposal will belong to the department and can be temporarily assigned to the student)
Students are encouraged to discuss with and seek the support of a full-time School of the Arts faculty member.
If awarded, the faculty will be eligible for a $1,000 operating supplement which will be deposited directly into the faculty’s department operating account.

Students are encouraged to apply for funding to support individual research projects that occur outside the United States. The recent winners will study photography in Paris, glassmaking in Murano, Italy, wood sculpture techniques in Uruguay, Peruvian textile techniques, Japanese culture and opera activities in Rome. Last year VCUarts awarded over $30,000.00 in these grants.
