The VCU Department of Music Student Research Grant Program is designed to support scholarship and creative expression that advances knowledge and understanding in the field of music. Students may present at professional conferences, perform at summer institutes and festivals, publish work, and the like.
Current VCU music majors are eligible.
The amount of the award will be determined by considering the costs of the project, the number and quality of competing applications, and the availability of funds. The grant may be applied to the costs of one project only. Requests may include such expenses as tuition, registration fees, lodging, meals, airfare, train, mileage, equipment and supplies. All submissions are subject to university and state regulations.
Submit the application and supporting materials to the Chair of the Department of Music on or before the following dates:
- April 15 for projects beginning after May 15
- August 15 for projects beginning after September 15
- December 15 for projects beginning after January 15
No application is approved until so stated in writing by the Chair of the Department of Music.
Students receiving a grant will be required to attend an orientation meeting with Linda Johnston, Administrative Director in the Department of Music, to be briefed on fiscal procedures and to sign funding forms prior to their projects. Note that many funds can only be paid by reimbursement. Students must submit eligible receipts at the conclusion of their projects and adhere to university and state guidelines.
As a condition of reimbursement, students must submit a 750-word final report on their project.
Any publications or presentations resulting from this support should acknowledge the support of the VCU Department of Music Student Research Grant Program.
