Six VCU faculty members and an alumnus will offer instruction, including (subject to change) Prof. García, director of Jazz Studies, trombone/brass; likely Rex Richardson, trumpet; J.C. Kuhl, saxophone; Michael Ess, guitar; Russell Wilson, piano; Victor Dvoskin, bass; and Tony Martucci, drum set.
Selected students will have demonstrated an exceptional desire and potentially strong ability to pursue the craft of jazz improvisation and may be considering continuing that pursuit at the college or professional level.
Prof. García invites students to attend Jazz Day via their high school directors. Students who accept that invitation must complete, sign, and return the downloadable form to Prof. García with the signature of a parent or guardian. This form acknowledges that student and parent recognize their commitment to the student’s attendance that day. Such commitment is required because each of the six Jazz Day combos’ personnel are assigned in advance of students’ arrival that morning; substitutes are not necessarily easily found, and food costs must be correctly estimated.
Until this form is received by Prof. García, students will not be assigned chairs for Jazz Day. Please mail the signed form to him at: Antonio J. García, VCU Music; 922 Park Avenue, Box 842004; Richmond VA 23284-2004. (Note that the box # must be included.) Or scan it clearly and email it to email@example.com.
Note for guitarists, bassists and drummers
Guitarists and bassists must bring their own amps and cords. Drummers must bring their own cymbals, sticks, brushes, and hi-hat clutch. Drum sets will be provided.
In case severe weather prompts concern about whether the day’s event will take place, contact García’s office at (804) 827-0699. A recorded message will indicate event cancellation.
