Degree Programs and Curriculum
As a keyboard student at VCU, you have opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with a choral or instrumental emphasis, or a Bachelor of Arts in Music with piano as your principal performance medium.
The keyboard curriculum aims to develop well-rounded musicianship by offering intense applied training with a wealth of supportive courses such as both large and small ensembles, piano literature and pedagogy, keyboard practice and more.
Our keyboard majors have an array of opportunities to perform at both on-campus and community outreach settings. Weekly master classes and Convocations are conducted in order to provide students departmental platform for performance exposure. Piano students are highly demanded as collaborative partners for symphonic orchestra, band, choir, as well as vocal and instrumental areas.
The Keyboard Area features both nationally and internationally acclaimed faculty members who actively perform in the state of Virginia and around the world. Recent highlights include Dr. Zheng’s recording project of all Mozart sonatas for Piano and Violin and her performances and master class at the Schlern International Music Festival in the Italian Alps; Dr. Vlahcevic’s performances at the College Music Society International Conferences (Thailand, Malaysia, Spain, Croatia, South Korea); Dr. Staples and Prof. Wilson’s performances with the Richmond Symphony, the Richmond Philharmonic and the Petersburg Symphony.
Visiting Artists and Master Class
The VCU Keyboard Area regularly invites visiting artists and teachers throughout the academic year. Eminent pianists such as Menahem Pressler, Pascal Rogé, Jon Nakamatsu, John O’Conor, and Joseph Kalichstein have given performances and master classes as part of VCU’s prestigious Mary Anne Rennolds Chamber Concert Series. Faculty members from other recognized U.S. institutions have also frequently given concerts, clinics and master classes to piano students at VCU.
