Claire Zitzow attended Virginia Commonwealth University where she received her BFA in sculpture and a BIS in environmental urban studies. Over the past years she has received several honors including a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship, a John Roos Memorial Scholarship, as well as residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and Columbus State University as a River Fellow Resident Artist. She received an MFA from the University of California in San Diego in 2011, and was visiting faculty at the University of Colorado in Boulder in 2012. Her process relies on direct material intervention, site sensitive exploration, and pointed historical research. Often temporal in nature and specific in place and experience, her work spans mediums of photography, sculpture, sound, installation, writing, video and embedded performance. Group exhibitions include InLight 2015 organized by 1708 Gallery, Skowhegan Performs at Socrates Sculpture Park, Cheekwood Museum, and a solo exhibition at the University of Oregon’s White Box. Claire founded and is the Director of the contemporary art gallery, SEDIMENT, in Richmond, Virginia.
