How do i get one?
Ask around! Find a friend who’s done an internship before. Make some friends at a company where you want to work. Network. Facebook. Link In, List of Craig, etc. The administrative office doesn’t deal in internships. Once in a while we hear of an opportunity and pass it along but most students find them on their own.
What eligibility requirements are there to get school credit for an internship?
Anyone can snag an internship from the employer of their choice. To get credit for it on your VCU transcript, students must have a 3.0 GPA, obtain approval from the department chair, and then REGISTER for those credits.
Will i need an override?
Yes. That’s how you know your internship has been approved.
How do i get approved?
All you need to do is write up the details: What company are you with? What will be your job responsibilities? What do you hope to gain from the experience, etc. Most importantly, include the number of hours you’ll be given and your supervisor’s name and contact info – this person will assign your grade at the end of your term. You must submit this using the Internship Request form to Professor Turner then wait for notification that you’ve been approved and your override is entered. At that point you’ll register for KINE 492 and the credits will appear on your schedule like any other “class”.
Is there a cost?
Because it operates on your schedule as a “class” you will be billed tuition for those credits. If you have questions about tuition or financial aid, please direct those to the appropriate offices, not the KI office.
Is there anything else i need to know?
Yes, and this is important: 1 credit = 40 hours of work so to equal a 3-credit class, your employer will need to guarantee a minimum of 120 hours. If s/he cannot guarantee 120 hours, that’s okay! You have the option to register for only 1 credit (40 hours) or 2 credits (80 hours) but this must be determined in advance so that you can register and pay tuition accordingly.
Also, you must be prepared to show your work to Professor Turner at the end of the term. She will likely ask you to do another write up at that time evaluating your experience and displaying your new knowledge. Good luck!
