The Opportunity:

VCUarts-Qatar invites collaboration-minded applicants for the position of Director of Recruitment and Admissions. The Director serves as the head of the Office of Admissions within the Department of Enrollment and Registration Services and is responsible for the comprehensive admissions operations, including student recruiting, marketing, application reviews, as well as admission and enrollment processes for undergraduate and graduate applicants. The goals of the Office of Admissions are clearly articulated in the university’s strategic plan, the Quest for Distinction. Its vision is to attract, enroll and retain high quality students who will contribute to a highly skilled 21st century workforce.

Currently VCUQ offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design and Painting & Printmaking; the Bachelor of Arts in Art History and the Master of Fine Arts in Design Studies with the potential for the addition of new programs. VCUQ attracts students from Qatar, the Gulf region and internationally as well as fostering a student semester exchange program with the home campus at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Enrollment and Registration Services, this position will manage day-to-day activities of the unit including supervising both the admissions and welcome center staff. The Director will set the tone for an admissions office that is welcoming, helpful, responsive, and culturally adept. Collaboration among colleagues within VCUQ such as the Office of Communications, academic programs and across Education City will be important.

VCUarts-Qatar:

VCUarts-Qatar (www.qatar.vcu.edu) is the international branch campus of Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts (VCUarts). Located in Richmond, Virginia, VCUarts (www.arts.vcu.edu) is the top-ranked public art school in the U.S. VCUarts-Qatar was established in 1998 through a partnership with the Qatar Foundation and offers students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in fashion design, graphic design, interior design and painting & printmaking; a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history; and a Master of Fine Arts degree in design. Located in Doha, the capital city of Qatar, VCUarts-Qatar is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art & Design, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. VCUarts-Qatar is dedicated to global outreach and education and provides students with an environment for cross-cultural exchange that fosters inquiry, discovery and innovation. Examples of this mission are the two significant international conferences hosted by VCUarts-Qatar—the biennial design conference, Tasmeem and the biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art (www.islamicartdoha.org). VCUarts-Qatar attracts globally recognized designers, artists and scholars while fostering partnerships within the region, and beyond, that enhance the educational, economic and cultural vitality of Qatar. VCUarts-Qatar has 156 full-time faculty and staff and a student body of 361. VCUarts-Qatar was the first campus established in Education City, a unique 2500-acre multiversity campus. VCUarts-Qatar was joined by Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, Carnegie-Mellon University, Texas A&M University, Weill Cornell Medical College, Northwestern University, HEC Paris and University College of London.

Qatar, with English as the standard second language, is a progressive country in the Arabian Gulf and remains one of the healthiest economies in the Gulf region. Expectations:

The Director’s position will require both broad oversight as well as a hands-on management style, including a working knowledge of current best practices in Student Enrollment Management, recruitment, data driven admission forecasting and expertise in CRM. Collaboration throughout VCUQ on all matters regarding university events leading up to and enrollment of freshman, transfer and graduate students is required. He/she will provide leadership in executing engaging communications strategies directed to prospects, applicants and admitted students, ensuring that the admissions staff communicates clearly and timely in order to attract and enroll each desired cohort. The successful candidate will make a sophisticated use of high-quality, evidence-based enrollment decisions while inspiring others at VCUQ to work collaboratively to achieve enrollment goals. The Director must be innovative and adept at promoting both current and new academic programs as well as bringing forth recommendations for new recruitment ideas and strategies that match the mission, resources and market demand. The ability to successfully interact with individuals from various cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds is of utmost importance. International travel will be required.

Personal Qualifications and Qualities:

Required: To be considered for the position of Director of Recruitment & Admissions, the candidate must possess a Master’s degree, and/or training and professional experience that equates to a graduate degree, and demonstrable experience with responsibilities in US higher education recruitment and admissions at the undergraduate level; a solid understanding of enrollment strategies, market research, student information systems and appropriate and relevant use of social media; proven ability to interpret analytical data. Experience supervising a staff. Excellent proficiency of the English language both written and oral; excellent interpersonal communication skills in interacting with prospective students and families, faculty, students, alumni, and administration is expected.

Preferred: A degree in the fine arts. A Master’s degree from a US accredited institution. Experience recruiting graduate students within a US institution and an understanding of international educational systems. Appropriate experience studying and/or working internationally.
