Part of the top-ranked School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University (arts.vcu.edu), the Department of Music (arts.vcu.edu/music/) is committed to the advancement of Western art music, Jazz, and Music Education as academic disciplines, as fields of professional endeavor, and as catalysts that strengthen community. Approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in the Department of Music, where their studies prepare them for careers in music education, opera, orchestral, vocal, jazz, chamber and performance in military bands, conducting, and in numerous related fields.
The Department of Music seeks a dynamic leader for its choral program. The Director of Choral Activities will oversee a robust choral program that at once provides valuable experiences for music majors in conducted and student-led ensembles, and engages the wider community in high-impact choral experiences. Under an ongoing partnership with the Richmond Symphony, the director would also serve as the Director of the Richmond Symphony Chorus and holder of the James Erb Choral Chair.
The Director of Choral Activities will conduct the Commonwealth Singers, the premier chorus at VCU; oversee other faculty-conducted choirs; and oversee the voice chamber ensemble program designed to empower students to lead ensembles. The director will teach courses at the discretion of the Chair. In addition, the director will lead the Richmond Symphony Chorus in its performance preparation, selection, and development. The director will maintain an active performance/scholarship agenda with the potential for external funding, as appropriate, and development on a national and/or international level to complement and expand on existing expertise in the department, as well as serve on department, school, and/or university committees. The director will provide leadership in regional and national service organizations, and recruit and cultivate prospective students.
Applicants must have a D.M.A. in choral conducting or equivalent professional experience; ABD considered. Evidence of success or potential for success developing and teaching in college-level choral programs; demonstrated potential for a robust research agenda and national leadership in choral conducting; and demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
