SUMMARY:Open Call: The Medium is the Mess
DESCRIPTION:The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to announce a call for submissions for the upcoming Graphic Design Juried Student Exhibition\, The Medium is the Mess. This show invites designers to think outside their computers\, and challenges them to get messy. The jury will consist of a group of VCU Graphic Design faculty\, and applicants will be adjudicated based on creativity in response to the prompt and design fundamentals. Fifteen artists will be accepted. \nThe exhibition is scheduled for September 25 – October 17 in the Sponge Gallery on the top floor of The Anderson\, with an opening reception on September 25. Exhibitors are expected to deliver their own posters to The Anderson. Please note that the Anderson is not equipped with an elevator. \nThis exhibition is organized by Jamie Cox\, Graphic Design ’27 (coxje@vcu.edu) and Lian Wasser-Goren\, Graphic Design ’27 (wassergorel@vcu.edu). \n\nParameters & Prompts:  \n\nUse a quote from The Medium is the Massage as the content of the poster (see details below)\nPosters must be wall-mounted\, and arrive install-ready\, including the hardware needed for hanging\n\ni.e. hooks installed on the back of the work\, d-rings\, or a French cleat for a wooden poster.\nUnframed works on paper may be hung using clips or pinned to the wall by the organizers which will create holes through the paper\, unless another install option is provided by the artist.\n\n\nCan explore materials such as fiber or wood\,\nExplore texture\, cutout\, or low relief\nExplore printmaking methods including letterpress\, linocuts\, risographs\, and cyanotype\nPhotocopying\, zine-making processes\, and collaging are encouraged\nDo not use digital editing software\nLean into experimentation and new processes\nEligibility: This exhibition is open to VCUarts Graphic Design majors enrolled in the Fall 2026 semester.\nLimit one submission per person.\nThe application will be reviewed on overall understanding of the requirements and creative liberty taken.\n\n  \nTheme:\n“The Medium is the Massage: An inventory of Effects” is an experimental manifesto created in collaboration by Marshall McLuhan and Quentin Fiore\, produced by Jerome Agel. It was published in 1967 and became widely acknowledged by creatives and influential within design history. The title comes from a phrase that McLuhan often used\, “The medium is the message.” McLuhan changed “message” to “massage” to signify the ways in which various types of media can stimulate human consciousness. The book itself experiments with graphics\, photography\, and typography\, while expressing both commentary and ideation on society’s interactions with media. It also plays with physical creation techniques like collaging. \nThe Medium is the Massage aims to show the human connections to mainstream media and the ways in which it is used as an extension of human senses. Media has the essential abilities to both ground us in a physical sense\, to serve as a tool to perceive and interpret the world around us. This show\, The Medium is the Mess\, is about pushing the boundaries of how a poster is conceptualized. We want artists and designers to create outside of the digital space\, use their hands\, and get messy. Think beyond a piece of paper in terms of the poster format\, experiment with materiality\, texture\, and composition\, while still maintaining typographic fundamentals using a chosen quote from the book. \n  \nTimeline:\n5/15  Submissions open. All VCUarts undergrad students\, enrolled in the Graphic Design department for the Fall 2026 semester are eligible to apply.\n8/30   Submissions close at 11:59pm\n9/4  Selected artists notified\n9/15  Artwork drop off\n9/25   Exhibition opens\, reception 5–7pm\n10/17   Exhibition concludes\n10/19 Artwork pickup \nApply Now! \nQuestions can be directed to Jamie Cox\, Graphic Design ’27 (coxje@vcu.edu) and Lian Wasser-Goren\, Graphic Design ’27 (wassergorel@vcu.edu). \n

SUMMARY:A System Of Exceptions
DESCRIPTION:The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to announce A System Of Exceptions\, an exhibition of artwork by Halima Bachir-Bouiadjra\, a double major student in Sculpture + Extended Media and Philosophy of\nScience\, class of 2028. The exhibition features an installation centered on a recreated hole in the wall and a\n“fruit fountain\,” constructing a parafictional space where distance\, depth\, and time become\nunstable. Drawing loosely from Zeno of Elea’s distance paradoxes\, the work uses humor and\nspatial illogic to undermine orientation and causal logic. Originally staged in an apartment using\nsound to extend the illusion of space\, the project was later restaged in the Murray DePillars\nBuilding\, where each iteration references and reconfigures the last\, folding the work into its own\ntemporal paradox. \nThe exhibition will be on view from August 28th – September 12th\, 2026\, with an opening reception on Friday\, August 28th from 5-7pm. \nThe Anderson is closed for summer break! SUMMARY:THE LATENT IMAGE OF US
DESCRIPTION:The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to present THE LATENT IMAGE OF US\, a solo exhibition by guest artist Kei Ito. \nIto is a Baltimore-based interdisciplinary artist whose work expands photographic media through cameraless processes\, installation\, and chance-based material transformation. Working with light\, archive\, and ephemeral processes\, he explores memory\, history\, and the invisible forces that shape human experience. Drawing from his family history—his grandfather survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and lived with the lasting trauma of family loss and long-term health effects before eventually passing away from cancer—Ito examines how individuals are shaped by global histories and political forces\, particularly those tied to war and national identity. Through his practice\, he creates spaces to reflect on multiple perspectives through which historical events and national symbols are understood\, as well as the invisible legacies they leave behind.  \nThe exhibition will be on view from August 28th to September 26th with an opening reception on Friday\, August 28th from 5-7 pm.  \n  \nThe Anderson is closed for summer break! Join us for our first receptions this fall on August 28th.

SUMMARY:Corpus: Selections from the Candela Collection
DESCRIPTION:The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to announce Corpus: Selections from the Candela Collection\, an exhibition of photographic work by twenty-five artists from the collection of Candela Photographic Arts. The exhibition will be on view at The Anderson from August 28th to October 17th with an opening reception on Friday\, August 28th from 5-7 pm.  \nCorpus: Selections from the Candela Collection\, features twenty-five works from the collection that directly and indirectly depict human forms. As a group they speak to the history of representing bodies and how these circulated images can crystallize into visual archetypes\, solidify into icons\, or produce genres. The artists push up against the limiting and adverse impacts of these conventions by challenging historical forces of idealization\, subverting prescribed identities\, and defiantly presenting the irreverent. Throughout the work\, the voice of the artists demand a say in the power dynamics of interpreting visual history and a place in building the corpus of images that impact individual agency by shaping our collective self-understanding.  \nThe Candela Collection is a continually growing selection of photographic work chosen from the annual Candela Photographic Arts UnBound! Juried Exhibition. The call to artists both nationally and internationally is free of charge and results in hundreds of submissions each year. Selected work is on view at the gallery each summer\, and a number of pieces are then purchased to become part of the collection. The curatorial aim of the collection is to gather work in a wide variety of photographic processes that reflect contemporary practices. The mission behind the project is to directly support photographers through the purchase of the work with the end-goal of donating the collection to an institution’s permanent collection. After 16 iterations of the call\, the current collection includes 149 photographic artworks and fine art photography books with a vast range of subject matter. \n\nParticipating Artists: \n\nFrancesco Amorosino\nLindsey Beal\nShweta Bist\nChrista Blackwood\nMichael Borowski \nTommy Bruce \nGary Burnley\nTony Chirinos\nAlida Fish\nDaniel Gonçalves\nRiley Goodman\nElizabeth Clark Libert \nLiz McGrady\nKendall Messick\nNadiya Nacorda\nLydia Panas\nToni Pepe\nAndré Ramos-Woodard \nLissa Rivera\nGabriel Garcia Roman\nRaymond Thompson Jr.\nPhil Toledano\nAaron Turner\nSara J. SUMMARY:Upcoming Open Call Fall 2026: Copy/Process
DESCRIPTION:The Anderson\, VCUarts\, and Creative Print Bureau are pleased to announce Copy/Process\, a juried exhibition presented by the Creative Print Bureau.  \nThe Creative Print Bureau (CPB) has undergone many iterations over the decades\, to keep up with the everchanging School of the Arts. It has held many different names and served many different functions. In this exhibition\, we hope to pay homage to the history and character of the Creative Print Bureau\, highlighting the then and now of this student service hub.  \nThe idea behind the name Copy/Process stems from a literal sense of the phrase to make copies using printing processes in the CPB. The more thematic idea behind Copy/Process asks the audience to reflect on the multitude of iterations this shop has taken on and the collaborative and artistic interpretations to be pulled from the words “copy” and “process”.  \nIn the fall\, there will be an Open Call for student proposals to display artwork alongside the archive. The open call will be juried by staff at the CPB and VCU Special Collections. The student work will play into the exhibition’s theme Copy/Process\, where we wish to highlight iterations\, playing off the idea of learning processes\, growing and changing throughout one’s creative process. The call for submissions will be for current students\, and will prioritize works that have been or could be made in-house at the CPB.\n \nThe exhibition will be spearheaded by Cassie Knudsen (knudsencg@vcu.edu) and Katharine Buckley (buckleyk3@vcu.edu) with additional support from CPB staff personnel and community members.  \n\nTimeline:  \n\nCall Opens: October 27\nCall Closes: November 20th\nNotifications: December 9th\nArtwork Drop Off: January 19th\, 12–5pm\nExhibition Opens: January 22\n\n  \nThe Anderson is closed for summer break. Join us for our first receptions this fall on August 28th!
