The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts presents VCU alumni Diana Al-Hadid

Diana Al-Hadid studied sculpture and art history at Kent State University in Ohio (BA and BFA, 2003), and earned her MFA in sculpture from VCUarts. Al-Hadid makes complex sculptures that seem in a state of flux, suggesting both incompletion and decay. Underlying her large-scale, baroque forms are a wide array of influences, including ancient Biblical and mythological narratives, Arab oral traditions, Gothic church construction, Western painting, Islamic ornamentation, and scientific advances in physics and astronomy.

The exhibition features a single new monumental sculpture—Trace of a Fictional Third—that interweaves landscape, architecture, and the human figure. It is accompanied by a selection of new, heavily worked graphite drawings that shed light on Al-Hadid’s creative process. Her work has gained international attention, including recent solo exhibitions at Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Murcia, Spain; Nevada Museum of Art, Reno; Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, Texas; and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. She currently lives and works in New York.

Exhibition of works by Saul Becker and Stephen Vitiello

The Horticultural Society of New York is pleased to present Field Recordings, a multimedia exhibition of works by Saul Becker and Stephen Vitiello, Associate Professor in the Kinetic Imaging Department. The exhibition explores how both artists collect fragments of the natural world and restage them as altered landscapes presented in multimedia sculptures, photographs, video, and drawings.

Field Recordings centers on several collaborative works, which combine Vitiello’s atmospheric sound compositions with Becker’s electroplated wildflower sculptures.  The exhibition also includes Becker’s landscape drawings as well as a series of Polaroids and a Super-8 film by Vitiello. Collectively, their work presents a vision of landscapes that are familiar yet alien, acknowledging our current anxiety regarding the environment while reveling in the beauty and wildness of the non-human world.

Opening Reception Wednesday, May 9, from 6pm to 8pm . The Hort is located at 148 West 37th Street, 13th Floor (between Broadway and 7th Avenue) New York, NY 10018.
