Curriculum Map

Students can take any combination of courses during any semester to satisfy the University’s core requirements, their double major or minor requirements, and electives.

VCUarts Cinema program requires students to either declare a second major in addition to cinema or have two minors. This is unique to the program and encourages the students to graduate as more well-rounded academic individuals.

Below are examples of academic timelines of both cinema with a double minor and cinema with another major.

Double Major/Double Minor

All Cinema degree candidates must complete a second major OR two minors through the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences. This is a non-negotiable requirement.

Honors College

Participation in the VCU Honors College is highly encouraged, but not required.

Transfer Students

On a case by case basis, transfer students can begin in Year Two. These students will be required to take an independent study section to make up for Year One courses.

Cinema Electives

In addition to the required courses, several optional electives are offered through the Cinema department each year. These classes cover specific areas of interest such as screenwriting and film theory.

Workshops

Open workshops are held every Friday. Students learn and create with full access to film equipment and computer software. Guided workshops led by select upperclassmen, adjuncts, and guest speakers cover material ranging from camera operation, location sound, grip and electric, production, and post production.

Summer Intensive

Students are required to participate in two 15 credit summer semesters following their Sophomore and Junior years. Tuition for summer semesters are comparable to Fall or Spring semester tuition.
