Applying to VCUarts Cinema Sep 12, 2016

We are in the middle of admissions season!   In addition to looking at our FAQ page, here are some guidelines for navigating admissions.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Cinema BA is entirely different from the Photo/Film BFA.  The Cinema BA emphasizes a collaborative filmmaking environment similar to industry sets.  We also focus on academic well-roundedness, and require students to pursue either a second major or two minors.

The Cinema BA is also entirely different from the Kinetic Imaging BFA.  If you are interested in animation and experimental video, look into KI.

We do not require students to pay for ANY of their filmmaking expenses–they are covered in your tuition and student fees.

Every Cinema class is very important and rigidly sequenced in the order they are needed. This means that all of the cinema classes must be taken at the Monroe Park campus, and so studying abroad and leaving the campus for long periods of time, for instance for an internship, must be planned ahead of time.

Typically, we do not allow students to choose a second major in fine arts and design.  To see our core curriculum and some sample second major & minor combinations, visit our Curriculum Map

In addition to establishing your voice in your film concept essay, we are looking for your storytelling ability.

TRANSFER INFORMATION

If you are interested in transferring and are concerned about how your credits will transfer, take a gander at our course equivalency tables.  The core Cinema classes are sequenced and cannot be covered by courses you’ve taken at other institutions.  However, courses you have previously taken may cover your general education requirements, or count towards your second major or double minor.
