Visiting Artist: Liz Lerman/Dance Exchange
April 14, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
VCU Dance hosts a public talk with Liz Lerman and Dance Exchange Thursday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Grace Street Theater, 934 West Grace Street. The talk is free and open to the public. Additionally, Lerman will teach a master class to VCU Dance majors on Friday, April 15 from 9:00-10:45 a.m. at the Depot Annex Studio behind 814 West Broad Street. The master class is open for observation. Call 804-828-1711 for information on either event.
For the 2016-17 academic year, VCU Dance will partner with internationally-known choreographer Liz Lerman and Dance Exchange to set Lerman’s iconic 1986 work Still Crossing on students and community members, for performance in the 2017 VCU Dance NOW concert. Originally created to address issues of immigration during the centennial year of the Statue of Liberty, Still Crossing will enter its 30th year in 2016, enduring as a work that, as Lerman notes in her book, Hiking the Horizontal: Field Notes From a Choreographer, “went on to be used in large community efforts to help diverse groups work together quickly and with satisfaction.”
Still Crossing requires that VCU Dance develop partnerships with intergenerational members of the local community, who make up the final third of the dance, with a particular focus on diverse and underserved communities. Partnerships are currently in development across units at VCU, and within the larger community. The project consists of an exploratory visit April, 14-16; the fall residency; and a February, 2017 performance of the work in the VCU Dance NOW concert at the Grace Street Theater.
