The Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Music is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Piano.

The Department of Music is committed to the advancement of western art music and jazz as academic disciplines, fields of professional endeavor, and as catalysts that strengthen community. More than 300 students are enrolled in the VCU Department of Music, where they pursue studies as music educators, instrumental soloist, opera singers, chamber musicians and more. VCU Music has great opportunities for those who want to hone their skills on a specific instrument, learn the best techniques for teaching tomorrow’s musicians, collaborate with other great chamber or jazz musicians, or to make music a foundation for other career goals.

Responsibilities: 

This position is a tenure-eligible faculty position in the area of applied piano. This position will teach applied piano, pedagogy, literature and coach chamber music ensembles.  Additional duties include working with the Director of Admission to recruit prospective students, serving as the Coordinator for the Piano area, managing the Piano budget, overseeing the performance calendar for piano majors, serving as a liaison between the Department Chair and piano faculty members and overseeing Keyboard skills instruction for all music majors.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in music; doctorate or equivalent experience preferred. Applicants must possess evidence of excellence in teaching at the college level and significant solo, chamber music, and/or orchestral performing experience desirable. Evidence of success at recruitment is also desirable.  Must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
