The Department of Communication Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University is searching for a full-time, tenure track faculty member at the assistant professor level for the academic year beginning August 16, 2013. Applicants should have an MFA or professional equivalent. A national and/or international record in the field of Communication Arts will be taken into consideration and can be used as relevant to establishing professional equivalency. Candidates must demonstrate an interest and expertise in concept art grounded in industrial design or in traditional/digital media and drawing. In addition, candidates must be knowledgeable in contemporary communication arts issues, critical and communication arts theory, the history of communication arts, and professional studio practice at a level commensurate with graduate pedagogy. Faculty members must have an established research agenda and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the Department of Communication Arts. If hired at the Associate Professor, the faculty member will be required to have a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department. All faculty must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Communication Arts includes studies in: Drawing, which is the fundamental means to articulate ideas; it is elemental to everything we do; Illustration, which has a rich history that is firmly rooted in drawing, painting, design and print media; and Visual Studies, which encompasses studio, historical, conceptual and theoretical issues that analyze and explore image, media, content and context.
