Degree Programs

Students in Art Education take courses in painting, sculpture, ceramics and photography, in addition to a variety of arts and design electives, rather than focusing on one studio area. Most art education students enter the teaching profession, but others pursue work as art consultants, art therapists, arts administrators, museum personnel or art-related business positions.

The second includes a licensure component and is designed for students who hold a B.A., B.F.A., or related degree and who wish to earn both a master’s degree in art education and a teaching license at the same time (MAE + Licensure).

Ph.D. in Education with a concentration in art education

Offered within the VCU School of Education, the art education concentration of the Ph.D. in education program allows students to connect contemporary art and education theories and philosophies, practical and professional experiences, and impact research to develop an area of expertise relevant to the field of art education.

Experiential Learning

Art Education students are encouraged to seek learning opportunities above and beyond their coursework, including engagement with the community through volunteer work, participation in service-learning courses and through their student teaching experiences.
