1939 – School renamed RPI of the College of William and Mary
1940 – First theatre production by what became the Department of Theatre

1946 – Men’s basketball team established
1947 – Departments of Art Education, Industrial Art and Crafts established
1951 – Five african american students admitted to School of Social Work
1953 – Achieved Southern Association of Colleges accreditation independent of W&M
1963 – Separation from the College of William and Mary
1965 – School of Arts & Sciences (College of Humanities & Sciences) established
1968 – RPI and MCV became VCU
